A Union County DWI case is generally handled in the municipal court for the place where the alleged offense occurred. The court named on your summons is your starting point. Do not assume that every Union County case goes to the county courthouse in Elizabeth.

Check the court name, case number, appearance date, and any later notice. Confirm whether your appearance is in person or online. Instructions can differ between Elizabeth, Union Township, Cranford, Linden, Westfield, and other communities.

The Traffic Stop and Police Video

License, Interlock, and Other Penalties

New Jersey DWI penalties depend on factors such as the offense date, blood alcohol level, prior offenses, and whether the charge involves alcohol or drugs. Possible consequences include fines and fees, ignition interlock requirements, loss of driving privileges, alcohol education or treatment requirements, and jail time.

A first offense should not be treated as a minor ticket. Repeat charges can carry more serious consequences. Gina reviews your charge and driving history to explain the rules that may apply to you.

An ignition interlock is a breath-testing device connected to a vehicle’s starting system. Installation, license restrictions, and restoration are separate steps. Do not assume that installing a device, or reaching the end of a suspension, automatically clears you to drive.

Breath-Test Refusal and Drug DUI

If you received a breath-test refusal charge, bring that summons along with the DWI paperwork. Refusal can carry separate consequences. A DUI allegation may also involve drugs rather than alcohol. A low or missing alcohol reading does not by itself resolve that type of charge. Tell Gina about any prescribed medicine and provide the paperwork you received so she can assess the allegation.

Start by keeping your summonses and court notices together. Write down what you remember while the details are fresh. Keep any relevant photos, messages, or witness information and share them privately with your lawyer.
