Two Different Windows Matter

Why your 24-month and 18-month totals can be different

New York DMV uses a 24-month point window for the ordinary suspension threshold, while the Driver Responsibility Assessment uses an 18-month window. That is why this calculator asks for both numbers.

11

Points in 24 months

At 11 points in 24 months, your license may be suspended. Other mandatory suspension or revocation rules can apply sooner.

6

Points in 18 months

Six points in 18 months triggers a point-based Driver Responsibility Assessment.

$75

Each extra point

Each point above six adds $25 per year for three years — $75 total per extra point.

Questions

Traffic point calculator FAQ

Does a ticket add points when it is issued?

No. Points are added after a conviction, but DMV calculates the point total using the date the violation occurred rather than the conviction date.

Does 11 points tell me every possible license consequence?

No. Certain offenses, probationary-driver rules, repeat speeding convictions, DWI-related matters and other circumstances can carry separate consequences.

Can a defensive-driving course erase my points?

A DMV-approved Point and Insurance Reduction Program can reduce the point total used to calculate a suspension by up to four points, but tickets remain on the record and the course does not reduce a Driver Responsibility Assessment.
